THE CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working on and leading industrial capital projects in industries such as pulp & paper, oil & gas, chemicals, power, metals and other process industries. They will fully understand all aspects of a PM's responsibilities on such products, including leadership of engineering, procurement and construction activities, development and management of project scope, budgets and schedules. They will have direct responsibility for management of all change that impacts scope, budget, and schedule, and for all communications to project stakeholders.

Note: the first projects are located in the western United States, and are already in progress. However, we expect to start several more projects in different locations across North America


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project Development and Management: serve as the primary NCT point of accountability for all aspects of the assigned project, including safety, scope, budget, and schedule, and for all project related activities from early conceptual design through to commissioning; including but not limited to, site selection, permitting, engineering design, procurement, construction management, commissioning, start-up, operator training, project closeout, and handover to operations. Will coordinate with NCT internal stakeholders including Technology, Operations, QA. / Q/C, Commercial, etc. to ensure that project design and equipment choices meet asset's Total Cost of Ownership lifecycle cost objectives
  • Project Team Building and Leadership: Building not just the Owner's project team, but also selection and management of engineering and construction contractors, and the establishment of project execution processes and strategies. Will manage external resources such as engineering contractors/subcontractors, vendors, and consultants to deliver projects on- time and on-budget. Must form collaborative and value-adding relationships with suppliers to benefit from increased performance on future projects.
  • Project Controls & Reporting: Implement a robust project control system to measure and manage key project metrics on a near real-time basis. Fully capable of developing project risk management plans and managing project risks. Responsible for timely and accurate reporting to the V-P of Project Development & Construction, and to the entire NCT leadership team, customers, and investors on project progress and forecasts. Present technical information clearly to a varied audience in a manner that provides confidence and clarity on projects meeting or exceeding business objectives milestones.
  • Processes, Systems & Tool implementation: The candidate will be directly responsible for, and in some cases, will play a key role in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of project management software, engineering standards, specifications, processes and tools including document management systems, project management processes and tools, lessons learned databases, etc. that are appropriate for a company such as NCT and which respond to the nature of the projects executed by the co.

  • Key performance metrics include project scope adherence, budget, schedule, safety, team performance and satisfaction, client internal and external satisfaction, contribution to overall company performance, and alignment with company values and objectives

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS DESIRED

Education: Engineering degree in any engineering discipline. A graduate degree in engineering, construction or an MBA is not required, but the additional qualifications will be given due consideration.

Project management and leadership experience: A minimum of 15 years of experience in industrial capital project environments with at least 5 spent in successfully leading project teams on all stages of mid to large capital projects. The experience would have typically been acquired as a member / leader of a project team for an owner-operator, engineering or construction contractor EPC firm, major equipment supplier, or similar organization. Note: 'the years of experience' criterion may be relaxed in the case of exceptional candidates able to demonstrate exceptional capabilities and knowledge

Should be able to demonstrate knowledge of best-practices leading to the delivery of projects that meet or improve on budget, schedule, safety and lifecycle cost expectations. Experience on the owner side of project teams with the ability to coordinate with internal stakeholders, and experience managing a project in multiple locations will be given preference.

Business and financial acumen: Demonstrate ability to competently manage the financial and operational aspects of contractor performance, and to make project decisions based on Total Cost of Ownership criteria

Procurement & Equipment Selection: possess experience in specifying, evaluating and selecting equipment and in organizing inspections and expediting through fabrication and delivery.

Construction management: Should have experience working with construction teams in the field when required, and fully understand the needs of such construction teams. Should be a true believer and practitioner of the Advanced Work Packaging AWP principle of 'construction led design', and be fully familiar with AWP best practices, including Workface Planning.

Industrial & Processing Sector Experience: strong preference for candidates with experience in building industrial plants and facilities; experience with high-temperature processes would be advantageous. Knowledge and experience with onsite co-generation facilities would be an advantage. Subject matter expertise in any area of engineering and / or project execution would be an advantage

Cultural Alignment: An entrepreneurial self-starter with the ability to perform with minimal supervision; able to wear multiple hats and operate successfully without the support structure of a large corporate organization.

Communication & Presentation Skills: Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be able to generate, review and edit reports and proposals, and present technical documents to a varied audience.
